Exciting Changes Ahead for Ankle Arthritis Sufferers in Lee County

Historically, ankle replacement surgery was unreliable at best, but the newest generation of ankle implants have demonstrated excellent results over the past 10-15 years.  The STAR (Scandanavian Total Ankle Replacement) ankle joint replacement system is the system of choice for Dr. Walimire as it by far has the most long term data and best outcome scores available amongst the four ankle replacement devices currently approved by the FDA.  Dr. Walimire is one of the few surgeons who is certified to perform total ankle replacement in Lee County.

If you or a loved one have been told that they need an ankle fusion, it is wise to obtain a second opinion with an ankle replacement surgeon prior to proceeding with surgery.  This is because few surgeons are trained to perform this procedure and because the recovery time is much shorter with an ankle replacement.  Ankle fusion patients must remain completely non-weight bearing for 6-8 weeks and then begin a slow advancement of activity.  The total time to improvement is typically 4-6 months.  Ankle replacement patients may begin weight bearing activity two weeks after surgery and are usually back to full activity after 3 months.  The other benefit is that once fused, the ankle no longer moves which causes the surrounding joints to move abnormally and become arthritic.  Sparing the motion at the ankle prevents arthritis from forming in these other joints.

Ankle replacement is not for everyone.  We typically reserve the implant for patients over age 55, those who weigh less than 250 pounds, and those who are not diabetic.  Exceptions can be made but are less common.  If you would like to learn more schedule your appointment with Dr. Walimire today!
